▲ About

Golden Stones Masonry has six full-time employees, plus a seasonal hand. We work on old houses across St. Paul, Minneapolis, and the metro on either side of them.

This page is the part of a website most people skip. It is worth two minutes here, because how a masonry company decides what to quote you matters more than anything on any of the service pages.

▲ 02 / Our Approach

What We Actually Believe About This Trade

Sam's position comes down to one sentence: you should be quoted the job that fixes the problem, not the job that pays best.

That is not a slogan. It determines how every estimate leaving this company is written, and our free estimate page outlines what that looks like in practice. The short version is that the smaller option goes on the paperwork whenever it will genuinely hold, even though it is worth less to us.

The thing Sam finds hardest to watch is a homeowner going into debt, or living with water and pests, because they could not afford thirty-five thousand for a ground-up chimney rebuild and nobody offered them anything else.

He is equally blunt about the opposite mistake. Patching a job that needs redoing, tuckpointing over spalled brick, or putting a new cap on a chimney that needs rebuilding are all ways to pay twice, and he will tell you that too.

▲ 03 / Family-Run

A Family Business

The Golden Stones Masonry crew at their work van

Sam's family is the reason the business exists in the shape it does. He has said plainly that he does not want it to grow into something large: the plan is to stay family-owned and operated, to eventually make his foreman a part owner, and to end up with something he can offer his son as a viable career if he wants it.

That has a consequence for you, which is why it is on this page at all. A company that intends to still be here in twenty years, run by the same family, in the same metro, has to be able to face the customers it served. A ten-year warranty means something different from an outfit that plans to be sold.

▲ 04 / What We Don't Do

Some Things We Will Not Say

Most About pages are a list of claims. Here is the inverse, which is more useful.

We also hold no trade certifications or association memberships. One is in progress, and until it is finished, we are not going to imply otherwise.

We will not promise that a repair will be invisible. Brick that has weathered for a century has color in it that new brick does not, and anybody telling you otherwise is selling you something.

We do not take on designated historic work, because it is a different discipline and we refer it to a mason who specializes in it.

We do not sweep chimneys, do graded safety inspections, install liners, fit gas inserts, or touch anything that burns gas. Not our trade at any price.

We do not sell drain tile, sump pumps, or exterior waterproofing systems, which is exactly why our opinion on whether you need one is worth having.

We do not knock on doors, and we have opinions about the people who do.

What We Are Licensed For, Exactly

Mortar being mixed on site to match an existing wall
01

Minnesota residential building contractor, license BC807211. You can look that up in a couple of minutes, and we would encourage it if anybody is quoting you.

02

It is a residential license. On commercial buildings, that matters, and our commercial page says so plainly rather than leaving you to find out.

03

We carry insurance and a certificate is available whenever you want to see one. Ask for it. Ask everybody for it, and ask for the certificate rather than the claim.

Who You Are Dealing With

A brick wall with arched window lintels on a pre-1940 house
01

Six of us full-time, plus a seasonal hand when the year is busy. That is the whole company.

02

Sam owns it, does every estimate himself, and is on site with the crew. He came into the trade in 2019 and started this company in 2022. He learned it from three masons he still names when anyone asks, which is rarer in this trade than it should be.

03

The office is one person who knows what a raincap is. The crew is the same faces from job to job, which is the practical reason work does not get handed to whoever is free that week.

▲ 07 / Our Story

How We Started, Briefly

Sam started Golden Stones in 2022 after three years in the trade working for others. The first big job he took on was a chimney rebuild roughly forty feet up, sixty-five courses, larger than anything he had attempted. It is still the one he mentions when asked about the most memorable rebuild he has done.

We are not going to tell you we have been doing this for generations because it's not true. What we would say instead is this: the company is young enough that the owner is on your job, and small enough that he cannot afford a bad one. Those two things are worth more on a masonry job than a longer number on a letterhead, and we would rather compete on them than pretend to something else.

▲ 08 / FAQ

What To Ask Any Mason, Including Us

These are the three questions Sam says he wishes homeowners would ask but almost never do.

Put them to every contractor who quotes you, not only to us. What each of them says, and how they look saying it, will tell you more than any about page, including this one.

Is there a cheaper option that will last fifteen years or more? Most of the time there is, and on a lot of jobs nobody will mention it unless you ask.

Are you licensed? Ask for the number, not the word, and look it up. It takes two minutes.

Do I actually need the full amount of work you have quoted? The answer matters less than how comfortable they look giving it.
