WHAT WE DO

Residential masonry across the Twin Cities

Rebuilt brick chimney with a new poured crown

Chimney Repair

Cracked brick, crumbling mortar, flashing and leaks. Repaired without rebuilding what does not need it. From about $3,500 on a single-story home.

Chimney Rebuild

When the joints have opened through, and repointing will not hold. Usually from the roofline up, because that is where chimneys fail first.

Repointed brick around a window opening

Chimney Crown and Raincap

The poured concrete crown on top and the metal rain cap over the flue. Two different parts, and the crown is the one that causes most leaks.

Fireplace and Interior Stone

Firebox rebuilds, refractory work, masonry fireplaces, stone accent walls, columns and stair treads.

Old stone foundation wall before repair

Basement Tuckpointing and Leak Repair

Sandy joints, loose stone, and water coming through the wall. Interior work, which means it runs through the winter.

Sam Tuhy and the Golden Stones Masonry crew

Stone and Block Foundation Repair

Rebuilding failed sections of the old stone foundations most of this metro sits on. From about $3,200 for a section.

Rebuilt brick chimney with a new poured crown

Basement Wall Repair Before Finishing

The masonry that has to be sorted before a basement gets framed, while the wall is still open and reachable.

Brick Walls, Built and Rebuilt

Full-brick garden, boundary and garage walls, columns and piers. Leaning and bellied walls come down and go back up.

Repointed brick around a window opening

Tuckpointing and Mortar Repair

Grinding the failed mortar out and replacing it on chimneys, walls, and foundations. From about $2,800 for a small area.

Brick Repair and Restoration

Spalled brick, salt damage at grade, rusted lintels and individual brick replacement on an existing wall.

Old stone foundation wall before repair

Stone Steps and Stoops

Front steps and stoops reset or rebuilt on footings taken below the frost line. From about $7,500.

Sam Tuhy and the Golden Stones Masonry crew

Stone Buttresses and Side Walls

The low stone walls flanking a set of front steps, rebuilt or built new alongside them. From $5,000.

Rebuilt brick chimney with a new poured crown

Stone and Fieldstone Walls

Retaining walls that drain, fieldstone garden and boundary walls, columns, piers and stone planters.

Everything below is work we do ourselves. We will tell you on the phone what we do not do and point you to someone who does, because a mason who takes a job outside his lane is how people end up paying twice.

Those figures are starting points for typical residential work. Every one of them depends on square footage and on what we find when we look, so treat them as rough guides to whether it is worth a call rather than as quotes. The exact number comes after the visit, and the visit is free.

From your first call to a finished job

Talk to
Sam
01 STEP

You call and reach a person.

You get a person during business hours. If you are more than about forty-five miles from St. Paul, we will ask for photos before we drive.

02 STEP

Sam comes out and looks at it.

Free, in person, and Sam does it. Masonry cannot be diagnosed over the phone.

03 STEP

You are told what it needs and what it does not.

Including when the answer is that it is fine for now. Several of our reviews are from people we talked out of work.

04 STEP

A written estimate with the options laid out.

Where a repair and a rebuild are both defensible, you get both, with how long each should last.

05 STEP

The crew that quoted it is the crew that does it.

The same foreman leads most jobs. Sam is on site for the complex ones. We clean up.

REAL JOB: SIX ESTIMATES, AND THE SMALLEST SCOPE WON

A homeowner with a 1900s stacked-stone cellar had six masonry contractors quote the work. She chose us, in her words, because Sam explained the options and their drawbacks, and because he recommended against additional work that would have raised his own estimate. When a scheduling gap opened, the crew finished the whole job in one day rather than stretch it, and held the quoted price.

▲ WHAT MINNESOTA DOES TO MASONRY

Why the small crack is the expensive one

Masonry in this state fails slowly and then all at once. A joint takes water, a winter widens it, and for several years nothing visible happens. Then the joints crack through, and the deterioration turns fast. Almost everything on this site is about catching a wall in the years before that turn, because that is the difference between a repair and a rebuild.

That is the whole argument for looking at it early. A joint that gets repointed while it is still a joint is a modest job. The same wall left until the brick is spalling and the wall has started to lean is a rebuild, and the difference between those two invoices runs into tens of thousands. We would rather quote you the small one.

01

Chimneys fail from the top down

Almost always. The roof protects everything below the flashing line, so a chimney has to be badly neglected before the damage gets down there. That is why most of our rebuilds are roofline-up, and why a cracked crown matters more than it looks like it should.

02

St. Paul and Minneapolis fail differently

St. Paul houses commonly mix three different eras of material in the same wall. Minneapolis is more consistent and largely Platteville limestone below grade, where the stone routinely outlasts the mortar holding it by generations.

Four things we spend a lot of time undoing

Old stone foundation wall before repair
Close-up of a failed mortar joint
Repointed mortar joint on a brick wall 01

Caulk used instead of mortar

It does not bond, it traps water behind it, and it has to be cut out before the joint can be repaired properly.

Brick facade being worked on 02

Brick painted with something that is not masonry paint

It seals the face, the wall cannot breathe, and the moisture leaves through the brick instead. The brick loses.

Old stone foundation wall 03

A sealer applied over a failing joint

Water is already inside the wall. Sealing the outside of it does not remove the water; it just gives it fewer ways out.

Rebuilt brick chimney with a new poured crown 04

A rebuild that did not go down far enough

If the stack is only taken down to a course or two above the roofline when the damage runs deeper, the new work sits on the old failure and comes back.

▲ WHY CHOOSE US

Four reasons homeowners stay with us

01 You are told in plain language what is actually wrong

The thing our customers thank us for most often is that somebody explained the failure to them: why the mortar went before the stone did, why the crown cracked.

02 If we get the scope wrong, we absorb it

The figure on the estimate is what you pay, including the jobs where we got the scope wrong and absorbed it.

03 Small on purpose

Six of us full-time, plus a seasonal hand.

04 We clean up

It comes up in our reviews about as often as the price does. Your garden and driveway should not look like a job site when we leave.

REAL JOB: THE LEAK NOBODY COULD FIND

A homeowner had water running into her fireplace whenever it rained hard. Another company had already rebuilt the chimney and poured a new crown, and when it still leaked, they caulked it. Sam found the entry point in an afternoon with a garden hose, and it was the crown that was only months old.

Sam, talking about a recent job

REAL JOB: A TWELVE-FOOT BRICK WALL

Sam and the crew replaced a twelve-foot section of brick wall. What the customer wrote afterward was that none of the things that set us apart were actually in the contract: straightforward communication, work done properly, and a fair price. His closing line was that he felt good about writing the check.

▲ WHO WE ARE

Golden Stones Masonry is a family-run masonry contractor working across St. Paul, Minneapolis, and the surrounding Twin Cities. Sam Tuhy started laying brick alongside a master mason, worked his way up through other people's crews, and founded this company in 2022 after repeatedly meeting homeowners who had been quoted one price for one option on a house that needed something else entirely.

Cracked brick, mortar you can rake out with a finger, water coming through a basement wall or down a fireplace. Whatever brought you here, one call gets you a real person and a free in-person look at it. We will tell you what it needs, what it does not need, and how much each option costs before you decide.

▲ ABOUT THE OWNER

Sam Tuhy owns the company, does every estimate, and Skye answers the phone

Sam learned the trade from a master mason, then from two more who taught him everything he uses today. He subcontracted, ran other people's jobs, and started Golden Stones Masonry in 2022 with one hire. That first hire is still here and still runs the crews.

The reason Sam started his own company is the same reason people keep writing about him: he believes homeowners should have a choice. He asserts that there is almost always an option that lasts fifteen years or more and does not require going into debt, and that a contractor who only offers the full rebuild has quietly made that decision for you.

The price on the estimate is the price on the invoice Repair and rebuild both priced, so the choice stays yours

Old houses are the work

Nothing about a pre-1940 house is an exception here. It is most of the calendar.

▲ COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Most residential chimney work falls between $3,500 and $8,000, depending on how much of the stack is involved. Our chimney repair page publishes the full tier table, including what height and roof pitch add.

Because we would be guessing, and a guess helps nobody. How far the spalling runs, how deep the joints have opened, and where the water is entering all change the job. The visit is free, and it is the only honest way to price it.

Several, and they are listed on their respective pages. The short version is that we are masons: brick, stone, mortar, and concrete crowns. We pass along anything inside the flue, anything involving gas, and anything to do with drainage systems or structural piering.

No. If your flue liner needs replacing, we will tell you and point you to someone who does that work.

There is a specific test that turns on three things: how many brick faces have spalled, whether you can see into the joints, and whether the stack leans. We publish the whole rule, including the borderline cases, on our chimney rebuild and tuckpointing pages, so you can check any contractor's answer against it. Sam will also apply it out loud, standing at the wall.

It may well be a mortar problem rather than a water problem, and the two need completely different companies. Our basement page explains how to tell them apart, including cases where drainage is the right answer and we are not the right people for you.

No. We do interior tuckpointing, parging and hydraulic patching. Drain tile, sump pumps, and exterior waterproofing excavation are not our work, and we will tell you plainly when that is what you actually need.

Usually close, and our supplier is unusually good at it. What we will and will not promise about matching is set out properly on our brick repair page, because it is the question that homeowners are most often given a misleading answer.

Yes. Interior work carries straight on: basement and foundation repointing, fireplaces and interior stone. So do estimates and emergency call-outs. The one thing that waits is fresh mortar or concrete laid outside, because neither cures in a hard freeze.

In season, usually within about a month for non-urgent work. For active water coming in we can normally be out within two weeks of the quote being approved, and we will come and look the same day if you call early enough.

Evenings and weekends, for water actively getting into the house or masonry that has become a hazard. We are not a twenty-four-hour operation and will not pretend to be. Urgent scheduling does cost more, and we will tell you that before you agree to it.

Our workmanship on what we performed. It is not a materials warranty, and it is not a guarantee against a different part of the house failing later. Ask us for the written terms before you sign anything.
